9-DAY ABRUZZO CULINARY DELIGHTS TOUR
Day 1: ARRIVAL/LORETO APRUTINO. Benvenuti in Abruzzo! You will be greeted at the airport in Pescara by one of our friendly English-speaking guides. Sit back and relax in your private accessible van and enjoy the stunning landscapes of Abruzzo as you are transferred to the cozy agriturismo (classic Italian farmhouse) where you’ll be staying. The agriturismo is complete with a pool, herb and vegetable garden and magnificent countryside views. After check-in and a brief (and entertaining) orientation, set out on a tour of the lovely hillside with your guide. Authentic Italian lunch and dinner are included at local trattorias.
Day 2: LORETO APRUTINO. Wake up to a home-cooked Italian breakfast at the agriturismo. After breakfast, indulge in a delicious half-day culinary tour in the charming village of Loreto Aprutino. You will learn all about olive oil production, but even better than learning is the sampling! After lunch, you will be whisked away to your hotel for a gourmet cooking class. Enjoy the fruits of your labor at an abundant family-style dinner. Stay overnight at the agriturismo.
Day 3: LORETO APRUTINO. Enjoy another delightful Italian breakfast at the agriturismo. After breakfast, your English-speaking guide will pick you up for a half-day art and history excursion followed by lunch. Spend the afternoon in another authentic cooking class. Once again, revel in the results of your own hard work over dinner. Stay overnight at the agriturismo.
Day 4: PESCARA COASTLINE. Wake up to the enticing aromas of yet another delicious home-cooked breakfast at theagriturismo. (You will surely be hooked by now). After breakfast, head out for a fascinating look at Abruzzo’s famed Trabocchi huts, where you will witness an ancient fishing method still used today. Then return to the agriturismo to show off your new cooking talents. (We trust that you’ll be getting pretty good by now.) Enjoy an exceptional dinner followed by a well-earned night’s rest at the agriturismo.
Day 5: PICCIANO. You will likely be wide awake and eagerly awaiting the famed Italian breakfast served by your hosts at theagriturismo by this point in the trip. Spend the rest of the morning at a local museum where you will learn all about the remarkable history of Italian contadini, or farmers. After lunch in a local trattoria, dig in for another entertaining cooking class at the agriturismo. Enjoy the grace of conversation, camaraderie and wholesome food at an abundant family-style dinner. Stay overnight at the agriturismo.
Day 6: LORETO APRUTINO. Ahhh, breakfast. After you tear yourself away from the first of several great meals of the day, it’s off to a tasty and educational tour of a local cheese-making factory. Learn a little, and taste a little. You can’t go wrong! After lunch, our culinary pros will guide you in creating another authentic Italian specialty. Drift off to visions of pasta alla chitarra at the agriturismo.
Day 7: PENNE. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the agriturismo. After breakfast, spend the morning at Abruzzo’s famous nature preserve, with 2km of accessible paths. In the distance you will see the famous Gran Sasso of Abruzzo, an amazing rock formation carved by natural elements over the millennia. Enjoy the fresh air as you explore, or relax, surrounded by lush vegetation. You may even glimpse wildlife in their natural habitat. After lunch, visit a honey production factory (and, of course, more sampling). Afterward, settle back into the agriturismo for dinner and a sound night’s sleep.
Day 8: CHIETI & ORTONA. Fuel up on breakfast for the fun-filled day ahead. After breakfast, head to the Chieti city center for a half-day historical tour. Wander down the Corso, marvel at the splendid architecture and visit Caffe’ Vittoria, Chieti’s famous antique coffee shop. Your journey continues as you view prehistoric archeological ruins. After lunch, we entice you with a wine-tasting course. No stay in Italy is complete without a little vino! The tour ends as you dine, like a king or queen of days past, at an ancient hilltop castle. Enjoy one last cozy night at the agriturismo.
Day 9: DEPARTURE. Relish every bite of your final authentic Italian breakfast at the agriturismo. Say “arrivederci” to your new Italian family that has cared for you so well during your stay. BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
To enjoy more moderate temperatures and lighter crowds, visit Italy in the spring (March-May) or fall (September-November). While more crowded, summer is great fun with lively festivals and outdoor activities, and the winter holidays in December are simply stunning.
